Bee on a lavender flower. Bee on borage flower.

Since I was very young I’ve been a fan of the bee, the number of times that they crop up in my photos of herbs and flowers should be a clue to most people. My given name is Deborah and in Hebrew that means bee, now that has nothing to do with my love of bees, but it is a very happy coincidence. For a while now I’ve been concerned about the decline of bee’s around the world, but I wasn’t sure what I could do about it. Recently I’ve been pointed in the direction of Plan Bee an initative being run by the Co-op to educate people about the decline of the honey bee population and to show them what they can do to help ‘Save The Bees’.

In my way I want to do my own little bit, so next year I’ll be doing a Herb Society display at Gardeners World Live in June showing herbs you can grow for the bees and for attracting other wildlife into the garden. A large variety of herbs from the list below will feature in the display and I’m hoping to be able to show the bees can be helpful in the herb garden and how herbs can be helpful to the bees.

In my garden I’m going to add some bee houses this weekend and make sure that there are safe and suitable places for bees to over winter. I’ve already ear marked some plants that aren’t bee friendly in the garden to be replaced with a few from the above list that I don’t already grow Goldenrod and White Horehound are on the list. I’ve signed the Petition for research into pesticides calling for more research to be done to review the impact pesticides have on the honeybees decline. The other thing I’m doing is this, right here now, telling you about the plight of the bees in my blog, so you can pass the information along to others and do your bit! Help save the bees, please!
